TEACCH at Partnership of Care – Supporting Adults with Autism
At Partnership of Care, we proudly integrate the TEACCH® approach into our support model for adults with autism.
TEACCH, developed at the University of North Carolina in the 1960s, is a globally respected framework. It promotes independence, structure, and meaningful engagement for individuals on the autism spectrum.
Why TEACCH?
TEACCH is based on the understanding that autistic individuals thrive in structured and predictable environments. It focuses on strengths and aims to improve quality of life rather than “fix” or “cure” autism.
We use TEACCH to:

- Support communication using visual aids and alternative methods
- Encourage engagement in meaningful, person-centred activities
How We Apply TEACCH at Partnership of Care
Our staff receive training in TEACCH principles and apply them daily. Structured environments reduce sensory overload and confusion. Visual cues such as symbols, photos, and colour-coded systems help individuals navigate their day confidently.
Personalised visual schedules show what activities are planned, their duration, and what comes next. This approach supports autonomy and reduces reliance on verbal prompts. Tasks are broken into clear, manageable steps using visual instructions. Activities match each person’s interests and abilities, promoting success and reducing frustration.
Routines provide comfort, but we introduce gentle variation to build resilience. For example, changing the order of activities or using different materials encourages flexible thinking. Reward systems follow the “work then reward” principle, reinforcing motivation and trust.
TEACCH in Practice
TEACCH is more than a method; it is part of our ethos. Whether preparing a meal, joining a community outing, or completing a sensory activity, our staff use TEACCH strategies to foster independence and wellbeing.
We also involve families and professionals through workshops and collaborative planning. Two Regional Managers are certified TEACCH facilitators and lead structured teaching across our services.
