Supporting People with Complex Needs and Challenging Behaviours
At Partnership of Care, we support adults with complex needs and behaviours that challenge across our residential homes Kellis, Parkside, Safe Haven, our respite home The Byre, Supported Living services, and Day Service Opportunities. Every person deserves to feel safe, understood, and valued, and we work hard to create environments where people can live with dignity and purpose.
Understanding Complex Needs and Challenging Behaviours
Complex needs often mean someone lives with more than one condition that affects their communication, health, or daily life. This may include learning disabilities, autism, mental health needs, physical disabilities, or sensory impairments.
Challenging behaviour can sometimes include shouting, hitting, refusing support, withdrawing, or other actions that feel difficult to manage. However, these behaviours are rarely “just behaviour.” They are often someone’s way of communicating pain, discomfort, anxiety, or unmet needs.
Many things can lead to behaviours that challenge, such as:
- Pain or illness
- Sudden changes in routine
- Feeling overwhelmed or anxious
- Not being understood or heard
We recognise that all behaviour has meaning. When we listen carefully, understand triggers, and respond with compassion, we help people feel more secure and in control.
How We Support People Across Our Services
We use Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) throughout Kellis, Parkside, Safe Haven, The Byre, Supported Living, and our Day Service. PBS gives people the chance to thrive because it focuses on understanding the person, not the behaviour.
Our approach includes:
- Personalised support plans built around strengths, preferences, and goals
- Predictable routines that reduce anxiety and help people feel settled
- Clear communication tools such as symbols, pictures, signs, and social stories
- Sensory-friendly environments designed to reduce stress and support regulation
- Staff who receive in-depth PBS and de-escalation training
- Close partnership working with families, therapists, and healthcare professionals
Every day, we look for opportunities to build confidence, teach new skills, and help people express themselves safely. We celebrate every achievement, no matter how small, and continue to adapt our support so each person can live a richer, more independent life.
