Supporting People with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD)

At Partnership of Care, we support people with Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities, also known as PMLD. This means we help people who have more than one disability and need a lot of support in their daily lives.

What is PMLD?

People with PMLD often:

  • Have very limited understanding of everyday tasks and associated risks and may require support with communication.
  • May not be able to communicate verbally and use other ways to communicate, through signs, pictures, touch or sounds.
  • Need support with their mobility, eating, personal care, and other daily living skills
  • May have complex health needs, including epilepsy or sensory impairments

Require high levels of support Everyone with PMLD is different. Some people may enjoy music, lights, or gentle touch. Others may prefer quiet spaces and routines. We take time to learn what each person likes and needs.

How we support people with PMLD

At Partnership of Care, we:

  • Use person-centred care – this means we listen to each person and their family to understand what matters to them.
  • Create safe and calm environments that help people feel comfortable.
  • Use visual aids, sensory tools, and structured routines to help people understand what’s happening.
  • Work closely with families, doctors, and therapists to give the best care.
  • Support people to enjoy activities like music, art, sensory play, and trips out.
  • Help people build trusting relationships with staff and others.

Communication and choice

We believe everyone has the right to make their own choices and we use a range of communication aids to support this

Supported Living can include:

  • Signs and symbols
  • Pictures and objects of reference
  • Sounds and facial expressions
  • Touch cues and sensory signals

We train our staff teams to understand different communication methods and to be patient, kind, and respectful.
